Long Exposure

Two posts in one day, well aren't you lucky! I've just been out and done a quick shoot using long exposure. I've only ever tried my hand at it once before but I didn't have a tripod at the time and holding my breath doesn't work as good as you'd think!

                                                               F/9 - 13sec - ISO200

                                                               F/11 - 13sec - ISO200

                                                               F/11 - 8sec - ISO200

Hopefully going into Manchester City Centre on Sunday evening/night to try my hand at long exposure a little more, I've seen some shots from other people and it looks like an amazing shoot to do so I shall keep you posted as and when I have the images for you.

Sunny smiles =)

Hello and welcome back to my blog, how nice is this weather for September! =)

So today in uni we've learnt a little bit about blogs, Power Point and Photoshop and some more different aspects about what the course will entail. We've also had confirmation about our trip to Paris! Exciting times indeed!

I'd like to share a couple of photographs I've come across by some very well known photographers that mean something to me in some way or another...

                                                                Leaper.

This first picture was taken in Paris by Elliott Erwitt in 1989. Despite the couple in the background nearly being blown away, the 'leaper' certainly has a spring in his step! The couple are certainly in keeping with the romantic side of which Paris is known for. I have a real love for black and white photography as I think it adds so much more character to the picture and I think it makes light of a really dull day!

                                                          Debbie Harry

This next picture is of Debbie Harry who was the lead singer in Blondie and was taken by Andy Warhol in 1980. I came across this picture on a recent field trip to the Lowry art gallery at Salford Quays and as soon as I seen it I was just taken away by it, it's so simple yet so very effective and gave me an idea to try recreate the look so I'm looking forward to trying it out sometime soon, just have to find a Debbie Harry lookalike! =)

                                                  Candy Cigarette 1989

This final picture was taken by Sally Mann of her young daughter at their home in Virginia. I have a real love for this picture and I can't really find why, it just stands out to me so much, I think as I pointed out earlier about the black and white adding character, you can see that this image holds so much character in the attitude, stance and just general ambience! Sally Mann was heavily criticised when she released this work. The subjects are her own children and the project was shot over some 10 years and show her 3 children growing, playing, hurting and just generally growing as siblings at their remote family summer cabin. Due to some of the images of the children being naked she received heavy criticism, to the degree of child pornography! As a parent myself I can see how her defence stands to reason, Her explaination was that the images are “natural through the eyes of a mother, since she has seen her children in every state: happy, sad, playful, sick, bloodied, angry and even naked.”She later went on to be named  “America’s Best Photographer” in 2001 so she sure showed them!

I think I've wrote enough for today so I think I shall leave it there for now!  No doubt I'll be back tomorrow with some images or some more written material so hopefully you'll be back to check me out, thanks for taking the time to read this blog and I hope you've enjoyed what I've posted as much I have sharing them with you =) Adios people...

Depth of Field

So today we were given a choice of cameras to play about with and familiarise ourselfs with, the Nikon D90 or the Canon 550D. I opted to try the Canon as I own a Nikon. We were encouraged to play about with the settings in Manual mode and changing the Aperture and Shutter Speeds.

Here are a few photos from then..

                                                                  F/16 - 1/8sec

                                                                  F5.6 - 1/3sec

                                                                    F5.6 - 1/4sec

                                                                    F5 -  1/1000sec

I had a bit of a down day after I finished uni, feeling a bit overwhelmed I guess but I came back today with the right attitude to what I want from this experience and where I need to strengthen my skills and I've been out and had a real good getting to know period with my camera and its settings, shot some 1000+ photos today! Anyways enough of my ramblings, thanks for stopping by and be sure to come back again =) Till next time...

My first blog =)

Hello there and welcome to my blog =) I'm a first time blogger so I'm sorry if its a bit of a waffle or nothing much at all but here goes... I've just started my photography degree at Salford university and am really looking forward to getting stuck in and developing my skills as a photographer and finding out more about working within the industry.

So far everyone seems cool on my course which is always a good thing! The tutors seem ready, willing and able to get stuck in and get the best from us all as a group and on an individual level.

I'd say I'm probably at the bottom of the pile when it comes to knowing about photography as a whole, I've never studied it before where everyone else seems to have learnt some aspect of it but hey ho, I've been given the chance to add to what I've taught myself and I'm going to take every opportunity to cram every little nugget of information into my brain!

I'm now the proud owner of a shiney, new Nikon D3100 and am awaiting the arrival of my shiney, new 50mm lens =) Can't wait to get out with that and snap away!

Anyway I think I shall leave it there! Jeeez and I was worried I wouldn't write much! Ha,

 Till next time, Adios
